It’s my first piercing, I am a little nervous – how can I prepare?
It is totally normal to be a little nervous, especially when it’s your first piercing, but you are in safe hands! With over 100 million ears pierced we will guide you through every step.
Dual lobe piercing is also a great option for young children or anyone feeling a little nervous. This is when two Piercing Specialists pierce both ear lobes simultaneously. We recommend booking this service with your chosen store in advance.
What type of piercing instrument do you use?
At Claire's we pride ourselves on providing a sterile and hygienic piercing service.
All our ear piercings use a high quality Studex System 75 instrument. This means you can benefit from a system which offers:
- Fully disposable, single use, sterilised cartridges for hygienic and effective piercing.
- Pre-sterilized earring cartridges which require no human contact - resulting in the highest hygiene standards.
- The piercing instrument does not come into contact with the ear at any time, only the pre-sterilised, preloaded cartridge.
- The piercing back is automatically installed onto the piercing with no need to adjust after piercing - for your ultimate comfort and safety.
- The system uses steady hand pressure to pierce and are specially designed for piercing with sharp posts to pierce gently and smoothly.
For nose piercings we use only a Medisept Nose Piercing System, which too uses a single use cartridge meaning the instrument does not come into contact with your skin at any point.
Should I avoid anything after my piercing?
Always try to keep your new ear piercing free from soap, perfume and hair products. Rinsing your ears with clear water after shampooing, then cleanse with aftercare lotion to keep ears clean and earrings sparkly.
The piercing should be cleansed with Claire’s aftercare lotion and kept dry, especially after bathing, swimming or exercise.
Take care when brushing your hair, exercising, wearing headphones or anything that might cause discomfort to your new piercing.
Avoid pushing the back on too tight, the tip of the post should be covered and secured in the safety notch.
Both disposable and reusable masks with fabric or elastic looping around the ear can become dirty quickly and could affect the healing environment for your piercing.
Take extra care when putting on and removing your mask to avoid catching the piercing. Always wash your hands and cleanse the piercing site after removing a mask or face covering.
Our Piercing Specialist will talk you through all the precautions you can take to make caring for your new piercing super easy
When can I swap my earrings?
A new piercing is so exciting, and we know you will be keen to try out new styles soon. It is really important that you give your ears time to heal before changing your ear piercing.
Lobe Piercing: With standard aftercare lotion it is usually necessary to wait 6 weeks before changing your earrings. With Rapid Lotion you can usually change your earring after 3 weeks.
Cartilage Piercing: For cartilage you will need to leave your piercing earring in for at least 12 weeks. With the use of Rapid Lotion you can usually change your cartilage piercing after 8 weeks.
Nose Piercing: With standard aftercare lotion it is usually necessary to wait 8 weeks before changing your nose piercing. Rapid Aftercare Lotion is not suitable for use with Nose Piercings.
How do you train Piercing Specialists?
To be a Claire's Piercing specialist takes more than just theory!
All associates are trained in local piercing policy, practice & perfect basic procedures in order to deliver clean, hygienic & safe piercing environments. Each will work towards their practical sign off, where they will demonstrate great piercing techniques before our Piercing Trainer validates the training.
Our training programme is certified by our partners Studex and our modular training program ensures our associates not only understand the policy but can practically implement it too.
The key is consistency, so all piercing specialists have annual refresher training and sign off too giving you the extra reassurance that your EP specialist will have the most recent knowledge!
My piercing is sore, what should I do?
Straight after piercing it is normal for the area to feel hot and maybe a little sore.
If, however, after 24 hours you have any swelling, redness or find the piercing painful, please seek medical advice immediately without removing your ear piercing.
